David Shoaf Memorial Scholarship
The David Shoaf Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding local saxophone player. The $500 scholarship will be awarded to the student but paid to the teacher of his/her choice. The award will be given annually until the fund is depleted. The scholarship fund is currently sufficient for 6 years. Smith Dobson Memorial Scholarship
Each year the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival Board awards one $300 cash scholarship to an outstanding student pianist in honor of Smith Dobson, an outstanding Santa Cruz jazz pianist, singer, arranger and teacher who passed away in 2001.
Santa Cruz Jazz Festival Board $100 Independent Study Awards Scholarships
Each year the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival Board awards at least eight $100 scholarships to one student from an ensemble, combo or vocal group at each venue each festival day. We also award up to two more scholarships for especially excellent student musicians. These scholarships will be awarded to the student but paid to the teacher of his/her choice.

Pacific Music Camp
Each year the Pacific Jazz Camp offers one partial scholarship worth $300 to an excellent Santa Cruz Jazz Festival instrumental musician. Established in 2003, Pacific Jazz Camp offers high school musicians an opportunity to hone their jazz skills with other like-minded students during week-long sessions on the campus of the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. They offer performance experiences in jazz ensemble and jazz combo and classes in music theory/jazz improvisation and jazz history. Master classes are also given on each instrument with professional jazz musicians. Student enrollment typically tops 100 each year.
Stanford Jazz Workshop
Each year the Stanford Jazz Workshop offers one tuition scholarship for an excellent Santa Cruz Jazz Festival instrumental musician.
The Stanford Jazz Camp immerses participants in a fun, focused, and supportive environment. The program offers instrumentalists and vocalists an opportunity play with motivated peers and study with a prestigious faculty of professional musicians and educators.Their highly-structured curriculum is tailored to the needs and level of each individual student. Improving student’s improvisation is the goal, and in every class and rehearsal, faculty will help the student to hear the sounds of jazz, understand what those sounds are, and play them when they want to. Get ready to play the best jazz of your life.
Families and friends of Jazz Camp students are invited to attend the free Jazz Camp Showcase, held on Friday of each week of Jazz Camp. Tickets for the pre-concert Friends and Family Dinner will be available for purchase online. Families and friends are also invited to purchase tickets to nightly Stanford Jazz Festival concerts.
Lafayette Summer Music Jazz Workshop
The Lafayette Summer Music Jazz Workshop is offering five 1/2 scholarships to the 2019 Santa Cruz Jazz Festival. The value of each half scholarship is $375.00.
Since 1998, the week-long Lafayette Summer Music Workshop provides an intimate and inspiring environment for learning and playing jazz. Master classes, improvisation workshops and jazz combos are led by some of the preeminent professional musicians in the field. The workshop is directed by Stanley Middle School music director Bob Athayde and jazz curriculum director Kyle Athayde. Kids – middle school, high school and college age – as well as adults have a blast!
The 2019 Workshop runs from July 14 to July 22. Auditions are on Sunday, July 14, and the workshop itself is Monday, July 15, to Friday, July 19.
Kuumbwa Summer Jazz Camp
Kuumbwa Jazz Camp is offering one full tuition scholarship to the Kuumbwa Jazz Camp for one excellent Santa Cruz area student musician participant in the 2019 Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.
Education has been fundamental to Kuumbwa’s mission for more than 40 years, and their commitment to sharing with their community the history, theory and artistry of Jazz has grown stronger with each passing year. The professional jazz artists and educators who participate in their programs and talks enlighten players and listeners at every skill and interest level.
Kuumbwa’s Summer Jazz Camp is an annual day camp for students entering grades 8-12 who are interested in learning jazz, improvisation and jazz appreciation. Students receive both individual and group instruction. The camp focuses on performance, basic improvisation and theory, concepts and phrasing, as well as history and appreciation. California Jazz Conservatory
The CALIFORNIA JAZZ CONSERVATORY is offering a 50% scholarship for full-time attendance in the CJC Bachelor of Music degree program in Jazz Studies beginning fall semester 2019 for an excellent student participant in the 2019 Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.
The California Jazz Conservatory is a music school offering the aspiring professional a comprehensive 4-year degree program culminating in the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. The CJC provides a challenging curriculum of performance, jazz theory and improvisation, ear training, composition, arranging, transcription and analysis, and music history courses, taught by professional artists and educators. Coursework also includes music business, music technology and financial planning, thoroughly preparing students for a fulfilling career in the performing arts.
